2017 Workshop video

In January of 2017, I taught a workshop using the 2017 Sacrament Meeting Program songs to teach different success principles about teaching children’s music (developmental differences between the ages, flow, tension and release, parameters, and many more).  Many of you requested to see the video that was made of it.  My thanks to the Johnsons for their amazing video footage they took of the event.

After hours and hours of downloading (it’s a big file!), and hours of editing the different camera angles so they make sense, it is ready (thanks to my tech guy son).  Click here to buy it on Gumroad.

You can download the file, or stream it from this website whenever you want. Let me know if you have any questions!

This sounds like it will be awesome! I just wish it was available before I purchased the book.

I can tell you that the book goes much more in depth than Sister Dance had time to do in this training. It is awesome to see her presentation, but the book fills in the gaps. I’m glad I have both!

    Sharla,
I just watched it!! It was so fun! Oh my gosh, you made me laugh. I love having fun (playing) with the kids. Watching you and listening to your insights gave me more clarity as to why you teach the way you do. I loved it! Thank you so much!!
I’m curious if you have any handouts from the workshop that we can download as well.

    • Sharla Dance

I only passed out a worksheet that my friend Courtney created to plan out activities for each song using all of the multiple intelligence areas. I’ll try to get that up. Thanks for asking!

I just watched it. Thanks SO much for putting it together and sharing your experience with me!
Is there any way to see the different posters you had on the walls? You referenced them a few times, but the video didnt really show them. Maybe a picture of what you posted and a quick description of how to use it?

Also I’d love to see the planning sheet you shared as a handout.

I’ve been following your suggestions for a couple of years now…and I learned some new things this time around. Thanks again!

    • Sharla Dance

Jessica, I just asked my son who was there with the camera if he took pictures of all the posters. I’ll post them with this post if he did. Thanks for asking!

    • Sharla Dance

Jessica, can you tell me specifically which posters I refer to (Words, words, words? Melody Maps? Multiple Intelligence posters?)? I would love to get you a picture of them.

      • Janel

You mentioned there was posters that list a whole bunch of ways that you can teach the different songs at the very end (last couple of minutes) of your presentation. I think that might be what Jessica is referencing and definitely something I’d love to see to!

        • Sharla Dance

          Dear Janel,
I am headed out of the country, but I will try to get some pictures of those posters up when I get back. Thanks for the heads up!

I couldn’t quite hear the name of the video you used for your silent video while singing “I’m Trying to Be Like Jesus” I can’t seem to find it on lds.org

nevermind, I listened to you again. “Light the World” video! Got it! Thanks!

    Dear Sharla,

Some of my sweetest memories growing up are of my mother teaching music in primary. For 25 years, off and on (but mostly on) as we moved from place to place, she was called to be primary chorister, and I reaped the sweet benefits. She was enthusiastic and fun, with a wonderful blend of spirituality. Over her many years of service, she created posters for literally hundreds of songs. The shock of my life happened one year ago when I was called to be a primary music leader in my ward! Although I immediately loved the children, music, and of course the gospel, my confidence in fulfilling this calling was weak. Borrowing my mom’s posters helped SO much, and we were able to learn and sing so many songs with their help. On Thanksgiving day, my wonderful sister who was hosting the whole family for dinner, pulled me aside to tell me reluctantly that she had been called to be the primary chorister in her ward for a second time, and would like the posters back (the posters had once resided at her house because my mom lived with her). I was panicked and rather devastated. I spent a month flailing around in primary, praying for help to know what to do. Because of the drastic change though, I began to search for other ways to teach, which lead me to your workshop in Payson in January. Sharla, I cannot express how thrilling, insightful, fun, and touching the things you taught us were! I was amazed that you selflessly flew from Oregon to come teach us. When I got in the car to go home afterward, I literally bawled all the way home, because I was SO grateful for you and for what I had learned. At the close of your workshop, you asked us to take a minute to write down something the spirit had taught us personally that day. I wrote “When I lost my posters, I felt like it was a tragedy. But now, I realize that it was a blessing in disguise. I’m no longer afraid. I’m actually excited to try so many new techniques!” Thank you from the bottom of my heart, for being an answer to my prayers.

    • Sharla Dance

Dear Corinne, Thank you for sharing this sweet story. I appreciate it. Thank you, thank you!

  6. Amanda

You are right Kristina. The book is fabulous! Together they will be a valuable resource. Thank you Sister Dance!

  7. Cali

Ditto!! The book and the workshop together make a complete picture! I’m so glad that I came, and that I have your book to reference over, and over again! Thank you for making the video available, and so affordable. I can’t thank you enough for how you’ve blessed my life.

I purchased the workshop video yesterday and I love it!
I wanted to watch it again but I cant figure out how to do that without paying for it again.
does anyone has any ideas on how to watch it again?

  9. Joy

I purchased the workshop video and have made a schedule of when in the video you do which song so I don’t have to re-watch the entire video for each song. I can only fast forward the video to 48 minutes and then I can’t go any further. I have watched the entire video through once and LOVED it, but would like to see certain sections multiple times. Is this possible?

    • Josh Dance

Hi Joy! Josh tech son here. What browser are you using? If you download the movie you can go to any part you want, but it should let you skip to where ever you want. Try quitting your internet browser and trying again. If that doesn’t work you can download it. Let me know if you that helps!

    • Josh Dance

No, once you buy it you can watch it as many times as you want. and even download it. Let me know if you need help.

  10. Ariane

I’m having a problem with the video. Once it gets to 57 minutes into the video, it freezes. I can’t watch the second half of the video. I’ve tried to watch it on my computer and my ipad and I have the same problem. I would like to redownload it again and see if that helps. Where would I go to redownload it without having to pay for the video again?

Thanks! I love the first half of the training!!!

  11. Sharla Dance

Hi Ariane. You would go to Gumroad.com and login. In your library is everything you have purchased on Gumroad. You can download it or watch it as many times as you want.

  12. Leslie Garrison

I purchased your workshop but I have not been able to find a way to watch it. When I purchased it I typed my email wrong, now when I try to contact the company I can’t because they always want my email, they then want to send me information to my email to make a log on which I can’t receive because if I use my correct email they cannot find my purchase. I tried contacting someone but I have not had any luck. Can you help me? I am not sure where to go from here. I can prove I made the purchase through my bank statement but I can not get anyone to help me out. I would love to watch the video.

    Thanks!
    Leslie

    • Sharla Dance

I just sent this to my tech guy. He said he would find a way to get it for you.

  13. Darla Broberg

Have you ever tried your techniques with adults? I’m putting together a Priesthood chorus for our ward conference, and have wondered whether your ideas and tools (like the Melody Map) might have some benefit there. Our ward has few men who really sing, and I thought maybe getting them to focus on the melody map rather than the hymn I’m having them do might make for a better experience and better presentation. I attended some of your classes this year and last in the Beaverton music workshop, and was tremendously inspired even though I’m not working in Primary. (I was surprised to see our Primary president there. She said she happened across a workshop schedule the night before, and when she saw the entries for the Primary music classes, she KNEW she had to attend. She said your classes gave her a whole new attitude about how she works with our kids.)

    • Sharla Dance

Yes Melody maps work with adults. Again it has to be age appropriate so work with them as adults. It can still be challenging (grin)!

    • Sharla Dance

Dear Darla, I would love to hear how your Priesthood chorus went! Yes, Melody maps do work well with adults. It has to be challenging for them, so a map at their level. Thank you for your kind words!

  14. Joan Harris

Sharla, I attended your workshop in January, and have used MANY of the ideas I learned there throughout the year. I bought and downloaded the video and have referred to it over and over as I have planned my weekly lessons. THANK-YOU so much!!! Will you be teaching a workshop for the 2018 songs? I will happily go where ever you’ll be teaching!

    • Sharla Dance

      Dear Joan,

Thank you for your kind words. I’m only an instrument. Thank you for doing the great work. I will be teaching January 27th in Bellevue WA, February 3 in Menlo Park, CA, and March 3 in Atlanta GA. I’m hoping to film in one of those places and put out a video for this year’s songs with lots of ideas.

      Thanks for asking!

  15. Joan Harris

I will ABSOLUTELY want to buy your video! Please film it sooner than later! Let me know when you make it available for purchase! Thank-you Sharla!

How did the ribber wonding come about, and how can I make some? are they on the wedsite?

    Jamie

    • Sharla Dance

The ribbon wand (I call them wind wands) came when I had a very kinesthetic and color sensitive boy who didn’t want to do anything in Primary. When I brought out the wind wands and we used them with the music, he was suddenly attentive and very interested because they spoke to his way of learning. A lot of children really enjoy using the wind wands.

Yes, there are instructions for making them on the website.

Can I get the contact info of your friend who made some for you?

Or can you give her my info?
