I Am a Child of God: Scarves for Younger Children

posted in: Uncategorized | 9

I stand in front of the children with my scarf held up in my hand.

“Pretend you have a scarf in your hand.  See if your hand can follow my hand.”

Begin singing and making the scarf move in this pattern. (The children don’t have scarves, but are mimicking your hand motions.)

Circle to one side and then the other

I am a child of  (circle, circle, circle, circle to the left side)

God, and (circle, circle, circle, circle to the right side)

He has sent me (circle, circle, circle, circle to the left side)

here. Has  (circle, circle, circle, circle to the right side)

given me an  (circle, circle, circle, circle to the left side)

earthly home with (circle, circle, circle, circle to the right side)

parents kind and (circle, circle, circle, circle to the left side)

dear.  (circle, circle, circle, circle to the right side)

Call out “Freeze! Watch my hand again!”

Change the scarf pattern

Begin singing the chorus using this new pattern.

Lead me, guide me (swish the scarf four times down low on the floor)

walk beside me (swish the scarf four times high to the sky)

Help me find the (swish the scarf four times down low on the floor)

way. (swish the scarf four times high to the sky)

Teach me all that (swish the scarf four times down low on the floor)

I must do to (swish the scarf four times high to the sky)

live with Him some- (swish the scarf four times down low on the floor)

day. (swish the scarf four times high to the sky)

Ask the children:  Would you like a scarf to hold?

Pass out the scarves.  (Use other adults in the room to do this.  You might want to put the appropriate number of scarves in ziplock bags and put them under the teachers’ chairs before the singing time so that the teachers hand them out at this point.)

Begin singing and have the children follow your hands doing the above patterns, this time the children are hold a scarf.

On the chorus I always want to start high instead of low because if you look at the words, walk beside me makes more sense to be low and then to live with him someday at the end would end high, like “up” in heaven. Thank you so much for your amazing, inspired lessons!

      Dear Hannah,

Thank you. I’m hoping to help. If you logged on to get emails (I send them infrequently, but about 4 or 5 a year.) perhaps I can give you some ideas about the blog helps. Thanks, Sharla

I usually do the same actions for nursery. They love the scarves. They don’t always follow me, but they sure try. 🙂 These actions are repetitive enough, that they won’t be lost and will be so excited to try and follow you.
